Manson Family Album is the first studio recording by American rock band Marilyn Manson. This is the precursor to the band's studio debut album, 1994 Portrait of an American Family . It's produced by Roli Mosimann, and is made up of original take and mix songs that will later be found on their debut. However, the band and its eponymous vocalists were unhappy with Mosimann's production, each claiming that it was less representative of their established voices, and called it too "subtle and smooth". The majority of the songs in The Manson Family Album were then re-recorded or remixed with Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor at Record Plant in Los Angeles. The album title is a double meaning; it also relates to the commune of the leader of the Charles Manson sect.

Marilyn Manson and Spooky Kids were formed in December 1989 after vocalist Marilyn Manson met guitarist Daisy Berkowitz at the Reunion Room nightclub, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The couple, always joined by many other musicians, recorded some original EP demos over the next three years, with Berkowitz composing the majority of Manson's music and lyrics. The highly visualized live band performances - routinely featuring naked women nailed to crosses, locked youths in cages, and assorted animal remains slaughtered - quickly gained them as a loyal fan base among South Florida punk and hardcore music. Within six months of being formed, the band played a sold-out show at a 300-capacity night club across Florida.
While working as a journalist for the 25th Parallel in February 1990, Manson interviewed Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor during the opening of the Nails assignment for The Jesus and Mary Chain. Both remain friends, with Manson finally presenting Reznor with a demo compilation. Impressed by the material, Reznor offered the opening group group for Nine Inch Nails and Meat Beat Manifesto at Club Nu in Miami on July 3, 1990. The band, which now includes Gidget Gein on bass guitar, Madonna Wayne Gacy on keyboards, and Sara Lee Lucas on drums , continued to tour and record independently for two years, using the results of a record deal signed with Sony in early 1991 to fund the recording of more demo tapes. Berkowitz then remembers that the president of A & amp; R in Sony, Richard Griffin, "personally refused us in a few minutes, said he liked the show and the idea but 'disliked the singer.'" In November 1992, Manson was invited by Reznor to attend "non-specific" strategic talks at Los Angeles. At the end of the year, Marilyn Manson and Spooky Kids became the first action signed for vanity Reznor's Nothing Records label, shortening their name to Marilyn Manson in early 1993.

Recording
The recording sessions for The Manson Family Album began in July 1993 at Criteria Studios in Miami with producer Roli Mosimann, and were concluded several months later in the fall. This recording consists of recording versions of songs originally demonstrated by the band during their formative years. Two songs in the recording, "My Monkey" and "Citronella (Dogma)", date back to their first commercially sold album, the 1990s Big Black Bus. Mosimann's production is intended for "foul, laden" sound, and the band uses a lot of tape loops, sound effects and samples during recording. At this point, "Snake Eyes and Sissies" is on track to become the lead single of the album, with Mosimann making one edit of the song.
However, the band was not satisfied with the result, believing that it was a poor representation of their live performances. Manson also complained that Mosimann's production repeated in songs that sounded "smooth and subtle, losing bites and edges." I thought, 'It's really annoying' So I played it for Trent, and he thought it was sucked. In early 1994, the band moved to Record Plant in Los Angeles, but without bassist Gidget Gein. Gein had been fired from the band a few days before Christmas 1993, due to his constant addiction to heroin. Berkowitz later claimed that this was "in fact the second or third time he was fired.He was a full addict at the time - totally out of it, would not show up, or when he did he was a mess and played very very alive." He was replaced by Jeordie White of Amboog-a-Lard, named Twiggy Ramirez. Gein later died of a heroin overdose in 2008.
The album was re-recorded over a seven-week period at the Record Plant, with Manson saying: "We spent seven weeks fixing, fixing, occasionally starting from scratch.This was our band's first experience in a real studio on a project of this size. what is expected.It's fifteen hours a day, with one team - Trent, Alan Moulder, Sean Beavan, and I - make a sound. "Berkowitz was initially reluctant to re-record the album, saying:" I feel doing this unnecessarily, and worry it will make us look like Nine Inch Nails/Reznor spin-off.The final result, however, is very high-quality work. "He re-recorded most of his work in LA, while most of Sara Lee Lucas's direct drum work was replaced with drum programming made by members of Nine Inch Nails Charlie Clouser and Chris Vrenna. Although he was fired, Gein's bass works remain on the album. After re-recording, the record was named American Family Portrait , with Mosimann listed as an engineer, and did not mention its original production role.
Aftermath and release
The Manson Family Album has remained unreleased for several years. Following Berkowitz akoyit's release from the group in 1996, he initiated a lawsuit against other band members. This was completed in October 1998, with Berkowitz receiving six digits, which he described as "malicious numbers". Furthermore, he obtained the copyright for the entire catalog of Spooky Kids, which included 21 previously unreleased songs. Former bassist Gidget Gein also completed his lawsuit against the band that same year, for an amount similar to that accepted by Berkowitz: "I am not allowed to discuss specifics of this case, but I know [Berkowitz] does not make much more than I because the accountants send their numbers to my lawyers by mistake.You'll think we'll be millionaires from the records we sell, but no. "
Berkowitz released the first in the two-part series of Spooky Kids recording in 2004. Lunch Boxes & amp; Choklit Cows released April 20th through Empire MusicWerks. It contains 10 previously unreleased songs recorded by the band between January 1990 and November 1993, as well as a bonus DVD containing three live performances. While promoting this release, Berkowitz was interviewed by the creator of SpookyKids.net fansite, who requested information about The Manson Family Album during the AIM conversation. Berkowitz responded by offering a cassette containing the entire album, which leaked to the internet in July 2004 via BitTorrent and DC.
Artwork
Although the tape was never released, Manson said in his 1998 autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell that he intended to use a painting by John Wayne Gacy as the album cover. The same painting later appeared as a cover for the 1994 Acid Bath album When Kite String Pops . Also set to be included as an interior photo is a picture of Manson sitting naked on the couch of his living room when he was 6 years old. This image is also set to display in linear artwork for Portrait of an American Family . Although no genitals were shown, and it was taken by her mother without vulgar intent, Interscope's parent company, Time Warner, asked to be removed. Manson said of the picture: "When I was six years old, that's when Burt Reynolds had posed for Playgirl.my mom thought it would be funny to have me do that pose, lying on the couch" It just hurts if you get sick head. Differences
- "Prelude (The Family Trip)" and "Wrapped in Plastic" are missing from this album version; "Filth" is exclusive to this edition, and has never been released commercially.
- "Snake Eyes and Sissies" displays an extra paragraph, which makes it 62 seconds longer than the version that appears in Portrait .
- "Lunchbox" does not have an opening example from Robert Pierce that says "Next motherfucker will get my metal", and the opening guitar line donated by Reznor.
- "Get Your Gunn" repeats the chorus and bridges over the released version, and 50 seconds longer.
- "Citronella" was later renamed "Dogma" for its official release, although both versions were similar.
- "Sweet Tooth" does not have 59 seconds of introductory ambient noise found on Portrait .
- This version of "My Monkey" does not have a conventional chorus, and contains more audio samples taken from a television interview by Charles Manson than the Portrait version, which appears where the chorus will be present. Robert Pierce's vocals are also clearer and placed higher in the mix.
