Monochrome photography is photography where each position on an image can record and show different amounts of light, but not a different color. It includes all forms of black-and-white photography, which produces images containing gray neutral tones ranging from black to white. Colors other than gray, such as sepia, cyan or brown can also be used in monochrome photography. In the contemporary world, monochrome photography is widely used for artistic purposes and certain technical imaging applications, not for accurate visual scene reproduction.

Description

Most modern black-and-white movies, called panchromatic films, record the entire visible spectrum. Some films are orthochromatic, recording wavelengths of light that appear shorter than 590 nanometers, in the blue to green spectral range and less sensitive to longer wavelength ranges (ie orange-red) of the visible spectrum. Black and white photography is considered by some to be more subtle and interpretative, and less realistic than color photography. Monochrome images are not the direct rendering of the subject, but are abstractions of reality, representing colors in shades of gray. In computer terms, this is often called greyscale. Black and white photography is considered by some to add a more emotional touch to the subject, compared to original color photography.

Sepia and brown images are produced by certain photography processes such as calotype and albumen prints, or by using a toning solution that converts silver into images into silver sulphide, instilling chocolate or sepia tones. Selenium toner produces blue-black or purple images, similar to turning silver into a more stable silver selenide. Cyanotypes use iron salts of silver salts to make blue and white images.

Monochrome images can be produced in several ways. Finding and capturing scenes with only certain color variants, while difficult and unusual in practice, will produce images that are technically qualified as monochrome photos. One can also artificially limit the various colors in a photo to those who are in a certain hue by using film or black-and-white paper, or by manipulating color images using computer software.

Color images can be converted to black and white on a computer using several methods, including the desensulation of existing RGB color images so that no color remains visible (which still allows color channels to be manipulated to change tones like dark blue skies, or by converting images to versions gray (which removes the color permanently), using software programs such as Photoshop.After converting software to monochrome images, one or more colors can replace gray tones to mimic duotones, sepia, selenium or gold-colored images or cyanotype prints , calotype or albumen.
