The Addiction is an American 1995 vampire film directed by Abel Ferrara, starring Lili Taylor, Christopher Walken and Annabella Sciorra. It was written by the regular screenwriter Ferrara, Nicholas St John, filmed in black and white and released simultaneously with the Ferrara period gangster film, The Funeral.

This film has been considered an allegory of drug addiction, as well as allegory of the theological concept of sin. It contains other philosophical, theological and intellectual content, including references to Husserl, Nietzsche, Feuerbach, and Descartes. The film also features vampires quoting theologian R. C. Sproul, who is a Roman Catholic critic.

Plot

Kathleen Conklin (Taylor), a young philosophy student at New York University, was attacked by a woman (Annabella Sciorra) called "Casanova", who told Kathleen to "order me to leave" and, when Kathleen could not do so, bit her neck and drink his blood. Kathleen developed some of the traditional vampire symptoms, including daytime reluctance and dislike of eating. The film follows its degradation. This suggests that vampires become immortal in this film but the price is a blood addiction. Vampires are shown to blame their victims for not being strong enough to fight them. Kathleen met an anthropology student (Kathryn Erbe), who was the victim. After Kathleen drank the blood for her and she cried in disbelief, Kathleen coldly told her: "My ignorance is not a concern here, it is your wonder that needs to be learned". Kathleen then meets Peina (Walken), a vampire who claims to almost conquer her addiction and as a result almost human. For the time being he held her at home trying to help her overcome hers, recommending she read William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch .

At her graduation party, Kathleen badly announced, "I want to share a little about what I've learned". She, Casanova, Jean, and several other Kathleen victims attacked family, friends, teachers and other attendees at a bloody mess. After that, Kathleen, apparently an overdose of bacchanal bleeding and looking sorry for regret, wanders the streets. She ends up at the hospital and asks the nurse to let her die. The nurse said no one would let her die. Kathleen decides to commit suicide by asking the nurse to open the curtains.

Kathleen was confronted by Casanova, who stopped her suicide attempt and quoted Sproul to her. Kathleen succumbed to her new fate and in the final scene, she was shown walking away from the grave with her name during the day. His birth date on the tombstone is October 31, 1967 and the date of his death is November 1, 1994. The film ends with Kathleen citing the line: "self-revelation is self-annihilation".

Production

According to Abel Ferrara, the characters Peina and Casanova were originally written as women and men. When Walken reads the script, he thinks Peina is a male character and wants to play the role. As a result, Walken has a way of portraying Peina while Casanova is played by Sciorra.
