The sex divers , sometimes referred to as a partner substitute , is a practitioner trained in dealing with intimacy and sexuality issues. Replacement partners work with therapists to meet their client's goals. This triadic model is used to support clients on a regular basis: clients engage in experience exercises and build relationships with their surrogate partners while processing and integrating their experiences with their therapist or physician.

History
Masters and Johnson introduced the exercise in their book Human Sexual Inadecacy, published in 1970. They believe that people can learn about sexual intimacy only by experiencing it. In their study, the partnered subjects used this pair to assist in a series of exercises designed to help overcome sexual dysfunction. Unpaired subjects are paired with "replacements" that will replace spouses, work under the direction of a trained therapist and act as a form of mentor to the client. In their study, all substitutes were women assigned to work with single men. Today, most of the substitutes are women, but some men. The practice of Surrogate Partner Therapy peaked in the early 1980s with several hundred substitute partners practicing in the US Since then, the popularity of Surrogate Partner Therapy has declined but has recently reentered social awareness after the 2012 film The Sessions which describes a substitute job with a disabled person. Currently, those who practice Surrogate Partner Therapy are still very few in number.
Common issues
Patients often present with this specific problem:
Some people experience changes in the sexual lifestyle because of the disabilities they get (accidents, paralysis, illness, trauma), and substitutes can help them explore and develop sexual potential. The causes of sexual problems are numerous and possible replacement methods to help improve the client's sexual life vary.
Therapy
Because sexual problems are more often psychological than physical, communication plays a key role in the therapeutic process between patients and surrogates, as well as between surrogate couples and therapists. Replacement partners offer therapeutic exercises to help patients. This may include, but is not limited to relaxation techniques, focusing sensation, communication, building a healthy body image, teaching social skills, sex education, as well as sensual and some sexual touches. Replacement partner therapy begins with a meeting between the client, the therapist, and the surrogate partner in which the client's objectives are discussed and the scope/duration of therapy is established. During the process, communication between substitute clients, client therapists, and partner-replacement therapists is maintained.
Some couples attend couples pair therapy sessions together, while some people (either single or in couples) attend on their own. The substitutes engage in education and frequent intimate contact and/or sexual activity with clients to achieve therapeutic goals. Some surrogates work in counseling centers, while others have their own offices.
