Puzzle Bobble (Japanese: ?????? , Hepburn : Pazuru Boburu ) , also known as Bust-a-Move in North America, is a puzzle tile-matching puzzle video 1994 game for one or two players made by Taito Corporation. It is based on the popular 1986 Taito Bubble Bobble arcade game, featuring the characters and themes of the game. Typical Japanese animation and music, along with game mechanics and level design, made it a successful arcade title and spawned several sequels and ports for home game systems.

The characters and themes of the game are based on the 1986 Bubble Bobble arcade game. Original background music settings Bubble Bobble are played in game end credits.

Version

Two different versions of the original game were released. Puzzle Bobble was originally released in Japan only in June 1994 by Taito Corporation, which runs on the Taito System B device (with the initial title "Bubble Buster"). Then, 6 months later in December, the international Neo Geo version of Puzzle Bobble was released. It's almost identical in addition to being on the stereo and has several different sound effects and translation texts.

When set to US territory, the Neo Geo version displays an alternate title "Bust a Move" and displays an anti-drug and anti-trash message in the title order. The Bust-a-Move title is used for all subsequent games in the series in the United States and Canada, as well as for some console releases (non-Taito) in Europe.

Gameplay

At the start of each round, the rectangle playing field contains a pre-arranged "bubble" color pattern. (This is actually referred to in the translation as a "ball"; however, they are obviously meant to be bubbles, as they appear, and are taken from Bubble Bobble .) At the bottom of the screen, the player controls a device called " ", which directs and activates bubbles onto the screen. The colors of bubbles fired are generated randomly and selected from the color of the remaining bubbles on the screen.

The bubbles fired move in a straight line (possibly bouncing off the side wall of the arena), stopping when they touch another bubble or reaching the top of the arena. If the bubbles touch the identical colored bubbles, forming groups of three or more, the bubbles - as well as any bubbles hanging from it - are removed from the playing field, and points are given.

After every few shots, the "ceiling" of the playing arena drops down a bit, along with all the bubbles that stick to it. The number of shots between each fall of the ceiling is affected by the amount of bubble color remaining. The closer the bubbles get to the bottom of the screen, the faster the music is played and if they cross the line at the bottom then the game is over.

The purpose of this game is to clear all bubbles from the arena without any bubbles that cross the bottom line. Bubbles will turn on automatically if the player stays still. After finishing the arena, the next round begins with a new bubble pattern to clear. The game consists of 32 levels.

Rating system

Like many popular arcade games, experienced players (who can complete the game easily) become much more interested in secondary challenges to get high scores (which involves more skills and strategies). Puzzle Bobble is very concerned about this interest, displaying an exponential valuation system that allows very high scores to achieve.

"Appears" bubbles (ie, bubbles of the same color that disappear) are each worth 10 points. However, dropping bubbles (ie bubbles that hang from bubbles that appear), is worth far more: a falling bubble produces 20 points; two values of 40; three scores of 80. This number continues to double for every dropped bubble, up to 17 or more bubbles with a score of 1,310,720 points. It is possible to achieve this maximum in most rounds (sometimes twice or more), resulting in a total score of 30 million and so on.

Bonus points are also given to complete the rounds quickly. Maximum 50,000 bonus points are awarded for completing rounds in 5 seconds or less; This bonus then drops to zero for the next minute, after which no bonus is given.

Two player modes

No rounds in two player matches. Both players have their respective arenas (both visible on the screen) and identical settings of colored bubbles in each arena. When a player moves a large group (four bubbles or more) some are transferred to the opposing arena, usually postponing their efforts to remove all bubbles from their respective arenas. In some versions, these two games can also be played by one player against a computer opponent.

Reception

Reviewing the Super NES version, Mike Weigand from Electronic Gaming Monthly calls it "a really fun and highly addictive puzzle game". He considers both player modes as the spotlight, but also says that the one-player mode presents a solid challenge. GamePro gave it a generally negative review, saying it "started fun but ultimately has no hassle and longevity." They describe that in one mode the players of all levels feel the same way, and that two player matches are too quick to build any excitement. They also criticized the lack of 3D effects on graphics.

A reviewer for Next Generation , while questioning the viability of the action puzzle genre, admits that the game is "very simple and highly addictive". He commented that although the 3DO version did not make any significant additions, nobody was called by the game with such simple pleasures. The short review of the 3DO version commented, "The motion and shooting controls are very responsive and the simple visual and music is done well. It's one of the tangles it's not a bust."

Clone

The simplicity of the concept has caused many clones, both commercial and otherwise. 1996 Snood replaces the bubble with a small creature and has succeeded by itself. Worms Blast is Team 17 who took the concept. Mobile clones include Bubble Witch Saga and Bubble Shooter . Frozen Bubble is a free software clone.
