Tn. Brooks is a 2007 American psychological thriller directed by Bruce A. Evans, starring Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, Dane Cook and William Hurt. It was released on June 1, 2007. The film follows an eponymous character, a prominent Portland entrepreneur and serial killer (Costner) who is forced to take protà © Ã… © gÃÆ' © (Cook) after being blackmailed, and must compete with his bloodthirsty alter ego ( Hurt) who convinces him to indulge his "habits". His life became more complicated when a police officer who was driven (Moore) reopened an investigation into his murder.

Plot
Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner) is a wealthy and successful businessman who has recently been honored by Portland, Oregon, Chamber of Commerce as "Man of the Year". However, Brooks lives a secret life as a serial killer, known as the "Thumbprint Killer". Brooks has abstained from murder over the past two years by attending a twelve-step meeting for addicts, to try and overcome his "kill addiction". He felt the urge to kill up again, but, as his id, Marshall (William Hurt), became more insistent. Brooks succumbed to his addiction and killed young couples when they had sex in their homes and, as part of psychopathology, left every bloody thumbprint on the lampshade. Brooks followed the meticulous modus operandi, including careful preparation, cleaning the crime scene, even locking the door before leaving, and burning the clothes he wore during the killings. Marshall then realized that the couple's curtains were open, facing the apartment building.
Princess Brooks, Jane (Danielle Panabaker) suddenly arrived home, after dropping out of college in Palo Alto, California. He visits Brooks at work and mentions that he wants to get a job with his company. On the same day, a man who calls himself "Mister Smith" (Dane Cook) shows up in Brooks work and blackmail him with photos of Brooks on the last murder. Smith demanded that Brooks take him on a murder, which Brooks reluctantly agreed to.
Brooks's wife, Emma (Marg Helgenberger), revealed that Jane dropped out of college because she was pregnant. The Brooks was later visited by a Palo Alto detective who wanted to interview Jane about the murder committed in the former dormitory building. Marshall and Brooks realize that Jane did the murder and considered letting her go to jail to "save her" so as not to become like them. Eventually, however, Brooks uses an alternative identity, flies to Palo Alto, and commits a similar killing to make it appear as though a loose serial killer, thus freeing Jane.
Brooks examines the background of police officers chasing Thumbprint Killer, Detective Tracy Atwood (Demi Moore), and finds her in the middle of a painful divorce from Jesse Vialo (Jason Lewis). Brooks decides that Vialo and his lawyer, Sheila (Reiko Aylesworth), will be Smith's first "victim". At Vialo's assassination site, Smith wets his pants in panic, leaving his DNA to be found by the police later.
As he drove away from the scene, Smith pulled a pistol at Brooks, which Brooks and Marshall would expect. Brooks explains to Smith that he knows he can not stop killing, and plans to commit suicide make his family embarrassed because he was caught. Brooks takes Smith to his grave, and explains that they will find an open grave. Smith will shoot Brooks and then cover it with enough dirt to cover the body. The next day, the coffin will be lowered to the cemetery and closed, and Brooks body will never be found.
Smith tries to shoot Brooks, but Brooks reveals that, at some point earlier, he has broken into Smith's apartment and bends the firing pin on Smith's gun, making him unable to operate if Brooks will change his mind. Brooks' brush with death makes him realize that he wants to live to see his grandson, and he lights a would-be assassin, slits Smith's neck with a shovel and hides his body in an open grave. With the urine of Smith that provides the only DNA evidence of a Thumbprint Killer at the murder scene, Brooks will remain undetected. Smith is called the Thumbprint Killer and Brooks back to his normal life.
Knowing him in a clear state, Brooks summoned Detective Atwood, whom he admired, asking him why he was a policeman. He replied that his rich dad wanted a boy, and he wanted to get away with it. Atwood was unable to trace a call before Brooks hung up, but he was puzzled when he realized Smith was not a voice on the phone and that they might have fingered the wrong person. That night, Brooks had a nightmare where Jane killed him, indicating that he was afraid Jane would become just like him.

sir. Brooks opened at 2,453 theaters and grossed $ 10,017,067, averaging $ 4,083 per theater and ranked # 4 at the North American box office. The film eventually grossed $ 28,549,298 domestically and $ 19,572,602 internationally for a total of $ 48,121,900 worldwide, above the $ 20 million budget.
Critical response
Mr Brooks received mixed reviews from film critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, aggregator of the reviews, the film has a 55% score based on 153 reviews with an average rating of 5.7 out of 10. The critical consensus states "The setting is interesting, but Mr Brooks Exceeds himself with the bend and subplot, it makes more sense when walking. "Costner and Hurt are equally praised for their performances. The film also has a score of 45 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 34 critics showing "mixed or average review".
Sequel
On the director's comments, Bruce Evans said that the film is the first of the trilogy, but just as the franchise depends on the movie's profits. Despite the commercial success, there are no plans to make more movies. Speaking in April 2009, Panabaker said, "Everyone wants to make a trilogy.I saw Kevin [Costner] last summer and we still will love it.Application about my character and Kevin's character, that would be great fun.I think you should see how manipulative both of them with each other.I would love to have done three. "
