An intervention is an effort organized by one or many people - usually family and friends - to ask someone to seek professional help with addiction or some kind of traumatic event or crisis, or other serious problems. Interventions are straightforward, usually involving confrontational encounters with questionable, or indirect individuals, involving working with dependent families to encourage them to be more effective in helping individuals.
There are three main models of intervention used today: Johnson Model, Rise Model, and Systemic Family Model.
The use of intervention originated in the 1960s with Dr. Vernon Johnson. Johnson's model was then taught a few years later at the Johnson Institute. It focuses on creating a confrontation between a group of supporters and addicts to expose the addict to the consequences of their addiction. The Raised Intervention Model involves exposing addicts and their family members to the process of collaborative intervention. Rather than being confrontational, the Risen Model is an invitational, non-secretive, and gradually improving process.
The Systemic Family Model can use an invitation or confrontational approach.
