Cyberpathology refers to the phenomenon that "individuals can become too attached to their computers, computer games, or the internet and spend an awful lot of time in front of their monitors". This can cause physical and psychological damage to the individual, for example, inadequate amounts of sleep, limited face-to-face interaction, and impact on daily life activities.

Cyberpathology shares many of the same core symptoms of behavioral addiction, such as importance, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, conflict, and relapse.

In contrast to computer and Internet addiction, computer anxiety refers to "a state of high tension or an apprehensive feeling of hope". Age, sex, and computer experience are thought to be related to computer anxiety. A meta-analysis based on research published between 1990 and 1996 found that: (1) female university students were generally more anxious than male students, but the strength of this relationship was not conclusive; (2) measuring instruments computer anxiety is generally reliable, but not compatible with each other; and (3) computer anxiety is inversely related to computer experience, but the strength of this relationship remains inconclusive. However, Bozionelos found that the youngest sample with the earliest possible exposure to computerization reported the highest computer anxiety score and showed the highest prevalence rates. In addition, Wilfong found that the computer experience did not have the greatest significant relationship with computer anxiety.

"

A similar term is computer anger, defined by Norman as "physical bashing and verbal abuse of computers or computer-related items." Wilfong (2006) found that computer self-efficacy beliefs have the greatest relationship with computer anxiety and anger. Likert type scales can be used to measure computer anger.

Online help

Individuals with symptoms of cyberpathology can turn to computers for psychological help. There is a large amount of mental health information available online. And the number increased dramatically as time went on. However, the information varies greatly in reliability.

Psychologists also see the possibility of online psychotherapy (eg, Christensen, Griffiths, & Jorm, 2004, Griffiths, 2005, and Mallen, 2005).
