Central Psychiatric Center is an institute directly governed by the Government of India. It is located in Kanke, Ranchi in the state of Jharkhand India.

History

This institution originated from the British Raj in India. England founded this hospital on May 17, 1918 under the name 'Ranchi European Lunatic Asylum'. It was then a capacity of 174 patients (92 men and 82 women). It caters to the needs of European mental patients only and it is under the direct control and management of the Bihar Government (later, Jharkhand is part of Bihar).

In 1922, he was under the control of the Supervisory Board with various participating state governments represented on the Council and in the same year his name was changed to 'European Mental Hospital'. The year 1922 is also important for the fact that the Institute is affiliated with the University of London for the Diploma in Medical Psychology examination. It was a unique phenomenon since the postgraduate training in Psychiatry did not exist in India at that time.

The Indian Psychiatric Society was founded in 1948 due to the efforts of this Institute and registered in Patna. The first draft of the bill which later became the Mental Health Act of India (1987) was written at CIP, Ranchi in 1949 by Dr. RB Davis, then Medical Inspector, Dr. SA Hasib, from India's Mental Hospital, Ranchi and Dr. J. Roy, from Mental Hospital, Gwalior. The latter two also worked in C.I.P., Ranchi at one time or another.

Hospital

The hospital is spread over 210 hectares of lush green campus. There are 16 wards - nine for male patients, six for female patients and one family unit. CIP ranchi is the largest mental hospital in the whole of Asia. They have a total capacity of 643 beds. Each ward is a pavilion type and has well-lined streets and grasses around it. The wards were built during British rule, and were named by prominent European psychiatrists and doctors. The ward is a bit away from each other, and the men's and women's sections are separated by high walls. Unlike other psychiatric hospitals, CIP, Ranchi has never been a custodial treatment facility. The hospital is always open and the patient is never locked up in the room. They are free to roam the walls of the hospital border.

Every year, about 3000 patients are treated and discharged after treatment. Individual patient care is a routine practice in the hospital. In addition, pharmacotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, psychotherapy, and family intervention are routinely used. An environmental therapy approach exists where the patient participates in running the ward and helps care for other patients. Regular physical exercise, outdoor and indoor games and Yoga are available to patients. The library with excellent piles of books in English, Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali as well as a number of newspapers and magazines can be accessed freely by patients.

Medical Training

Central Institute of Psychiatry is one of the premier training centers in India for mental health professionals. First Hospital for Mental Illness is recognized for D.P.M. England in 1923, when the graduate program in Psychiatry had not been heard in India. In 1962, a graduate training center was added to the institute, with D.P.M. and D.M. & amp; S.P. Program Other courses are added in time, and currently the following graduate programs in psychiatry and behavioral sciences are conducted at the Institute:

Controversy and criticism

student strike 2013

MPhil and PhD students from the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) continue unlimited dharna demanding direct recognition of the course by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). RCI has canceled the program in 2009 because it does not have an adequate number of Professors. Other courses also do not have qualified staff, which raises serious concerns about the quality of Mental Health Professional Training. Interestingly a pioneer institution in mental health has not had a qualified permanent professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology and the Department of social work since the last 20 years. Other factors that buy about strikes are student discrimination, harassment and exploitation. CIP ignores the Ranchi High Court-Decision 2008 to appoint professors in various departments.

The patient's breakout mass

In September, 1984, the Press Trust of India reported that 460 patients from over a thousand patients at CIP had escaped from the venue. They were able to do it because all the staff went on strike, due to low fees. Even after a week has passed, nearly 100 patients are still missing and still to be found. After the incident, The Times of India reported poor hospital conditions. It is said that many patients are half starved and in poor health, suffering from skin diseases and diarrhea. It also alleges that two meals served every day smelled of piss. The Times also stated in a later report that the hospital medical inspector, Durga Bhagal, was accused by an incompetent and mismanaged state government. Bhagal denied that there was a higher mortality rate in the hospital. The escaping patients pouring into the streets chanted "Save Us! ". The deputy head of the hospital said that there were 131 deaths in hospital the previous year, in the year of the incident, at least 151 patients died. The deputy head of department also said the death was caused by a lack of funding for the provision of basic needs such as food. A member of the West Bengal Psychiatric Association commented that there is a great lack of beds in mental health care.

Chinese POW detention

In August 2000, AFP took news by South China Sunday Morning Post that reported that two Chinese military officers from the Sino-Indo Border War in 1962 were there. held since 1965, after they were accused of espionage. The Indian Interior Minister said he was not aware of the arrests. The individuals are Yang Chen , a fighter pilot and Shih Liang , an airline officer. Staff CIP claimed after their recovery from schizophrenia, these two people remain because they have nowhere to go.

The Daily Telegraph, London later reported that these two individuals will be returned to China after 35 years of negligence from the Chinese Embassy and Indian Ministry of the Interior.

Suicide patients

In August 2005, The Telegraph reported that at least three people from the beginning of the year had committed suicide while being treated. Anonymous sources from CIP told the newspaper that there was a severe shortage of labor in the hospital. It is said that the patient-staff ratio at CIP is 40: 1 compared to recommendation 5: 1. The allegation of deficiency is disputed by the director of CIP, S Haque Nizami.
