Originally intended to be a duet with Chaka Khan, the song was made without him because his record company at that time would not give him the release to work on Palmer's label, Island Records. Chaka Khan is still credited for setting vocals on album liner notes.

Andy Taylor from Duran Duran (and bandmate from Palmer's from The Power Station) provides lead guitar. The other guitar parts on the song are played by Eddie Martinez and keyboards by Wally Badarou. This song is also famous for the opening of the drum without a companion, by Tony Thompson, alumnus of The Power Station other.

Noddy Holder (lead singer of British rock band Slade) stated in an interview that this song is the main song that he hopes he wrote himself. "One major song I hope I write and record is 'Addicted to Love' by Robert Palmer. For me, it's a perfect pop song, everything about it really touches the nail on the head."

Music video

The 1986 produced music video (which uses a shorter single version of this song), directed by British photographer Terence Donovan, was one of the most iconic icons of the era. Palmer's video feature features songs with abstract "bands", being a pale-skinned model girl group, heavy makeup, dark and seductive hair, a mannequin-like expression following a woman's style in Patrick Nagel's paintings.

The five models in the video are Julie Pankhurst (keyboard), Patty Kelly (guitar), Mak Gilchrist (bass guitar), Julia Bolino (guitar), and Kathy Davies (drums).

Mak Gilchrist is called back to magazine Q :

"I am 21 years old and get a part of the strength of my modeling book.We are destined to see and 'act' like showroom mannequins.Part Director Terence Donovan gets us drunk about a bottle of wine, but when we make our make-up retouched, I lose balance in heel me and tap the top of my guitar to the back of Robert's head, and his face then hit the microphone. "

Palmer recycles the video concept's "iconic" concept video for his three other songs: "I'm Not Meaning to Reverse You" (also from Riptide ), "Simply Unbearable" and animated "Change the Way" (both from Heavy Nova ).

Video VH1 Pop-Up Video about the video including the fact that a musician is hired to teach basic techniques of basic touch, but "give up after about an hour and leave". This episode also shows some choreographic errors, including models that move out of sync with each other, and move over the points without back beat, like a second chorus.

The music video was ranked 3rd on 20 VH1's Top Videos of the 1980s and was the last video featured on the long-running UK music program The Chart Show .

In the romantic comedy film Love Actually (2003), written and directed by Richard Curtis, the video for Billy Mack's song, "Christmas Is All Around", is a tribute to "Addicted To Love". The blank expression of the "Addicted to Love" model is parodied in the "Christmas Is All Around" video, with the latter model looking bored until it evaporates.

The models are also used in video parodies in "Weird Al" Yankovic's UHF wearing sunglasses and whiskers. The music video is parodied in the Stardust videos "Music Sounds Better with You," Tone of L's "Wild Thing," Bowling for Soup "1985," Shania Twain "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!", And Kasey Chambers's "If I was you".
