Obsessive love is a condition in which a person feels an overwhelming sense of obsessiveness for possessing and protecting someone else to whom a person feels strong interest, with an inability to accept failure or rejection. Although not specifically categorized under specific mental diagnoses by DSM-5, some argue that obsessive love is regarded as a mental illness similar to attachment disorder, threshold personality disorder, and erotomania. Depending on the intensity of their appeal, obsessive lovers may feel completely unable to refrain from extreme behavior such as acts of violence against themselves or others. Obsessive love can be rooted in childhood trauma and may begin at first sight; it can survive indefinitely, sometimes requiring psychotherapy. Obsessive love occurs in women than men.
