Beautiful Child: A Father's Journey Through Her Children Addiction is David Sheff's best-selling memoir describing how her family handles her methamphetamine addiction Nic's son. It was published by Houghton Mifflin on April 26, 2008. This book grew out of Sheff's "My Addicted Son" article for The New York Times Magazine in 2005. Son Nic Sheff's perspective was told in his own memoir < i> Tweak , published simultaneously by Simon & amp; Schuster.

Beautiful covered most of Nic's life and dealt with Sheff's older struggle about how to respond to a son he loves but also a danger to his family. Nic stole money from his siblings and was arrested for possession in front of them, and Sheff was forced to install a security system to prevent Nic from breaking. Nic attended a lot of rehabilitation throughout the memoir, and even with people who relapsed many times. The longest stretch that Nic suffered, before his last recurrence in the history, was almost two years. He then relapsed once more and went to the treatment. At the end of the memoir, Sheff tells us that Nic has been aware for a year. He hopes with all his heart that this will be the last time, and trust him once more. But in his mind he knew that a relapse could easily happen again and that it would be very difficult for Nic, his family, and himself. Another theme throughout the memoir is Sheff wondered about how much he was to blame and what he could do to prevent his son's addiction.

Throughout the memoir, Sheff attended many Al-Anon Conferences and therapy sessions. In this different session he is constantly told about the three C's, you do not cause it, you can not control it, and you can not cure it. Sheff had trouble accepting this statement throughout the memoir. But in the end, he says that he has received two from C, that he can not control it, and he can not cure it. She realized that she had done all she could to try to help Nic, and knew it was up to Nic to think about it all. He realizes that the only way Nic will recover fully is if he finds something of his own.

Beautiful Boy became a critical and commercial success. Reached # 1 on the New York Times Best Seller List on April 6, 2008, and again on May 4, 2008. Entertainment Weekly named it # 1 Best Nonfiction Book 2008 and won Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers Award for nonfiction in 2008. Amazon.com chose it as one of the "Best Books of 2008" and Starbucks chose it as one of the few books it will sell in coffee shops.
