Addiction medicine is a medical specialty related to addiction treatment. Its specialty often crosses into other areas, because various aspects of addiction include in the areas of public health, psychology, social work, mental health counseling, psychiatry, and internal medicine, among others. Incorporated into specialties is the process of detoxification, rehabilitation, harm reduction, abstinensia-based treatment, individual and group therapy, home surveillance on the way, treatment of withdrawal related symptoms, acute interventions, and long-term therapy designed to reduce the likelihood of relapse.. Some specialists, especially those who also have expertise in family medicine or internal medicine, also provide care for the state of the disease commonly associated with substance use, such as hepatitis and HIV infection.
Doctors who specialize in this field in general treaties on the application of treatment to those who are addicted to drugs, such as alcohol and heroin, and often also for gambling, who have similar characteristics and have been well described in the scientific literature. There is little agreement about a definition or treatment called other addictive behaviors such as sexual addiction and internet addiction, the behavior is not generally characterized by physiological tolerance or withdrawal.
Doctors who focus on addiction drugs are medical specialists who focus on addictive diseases and have special studies and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of the disease. There are two routes to specialization in the field of addiction: one through the path of psychiatry and one through other medical fields. The American Society of Addiction Medicine notes that about 40% of its members are psychiatrists (MD/DO) while the rest have received major medical training in other fields.

In Australia, addiction drug specialists are certified through the Chapter of Addiction Medicine, which is part of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. They can become members of the Addiction Psychiatry Section, Royal Australia & amp; New Zealand Psychiatric College.
The International Society of Addiction Medicine can also provide expertise certification.
