Plot

Located in New York City, Thanks for Sharing is centered around three people undergoing a 12 step process to recover from their sexual addiction.

Adam (Mark Ruffalo) walks along the streets of New York, tempted to have sex with various commercials and women on his way to work. Neil (Josh Gad), a sex-addicted and masturbating doctor, deliberately swipes strangers on trains en route to attend a sex addiction meeting. Mike (Tim Robbins) is a married sex addict who leads the group. She sponsors Adam, who has not had sex in five years. Adam sponsored Neil. They are all in a sex addiction meeting, talking about their progress. Adam declared he'd been 'drunk' for five years, while Neil was babbling jokes and admitting he was just there because the court had forced him. He again masturbates the same night, and lies about a drunken month for the addiction group.

Adam meets Phoebe (Gwyneth Paltrow) at a 'bug party' and they're dating. She reveals that she is a breast cancer patient and that her ex-girlfriend is an alcoholic; she did not tell her about her own addiction for fear that she would refuse. They start a relationship. Dede (Alecia Moore) joins the sex addiction encounter, and reveals at her first encounter that she has been addicted to sex since she was a young girl. Neil, a doctor, was caught secretly filming under the skirt of his boss, and was fired. He then starts to take the meeting more seriously, and admits he has a problem. Meanwhile, Mike's son, Danny (Patrick Fugit), a recovering drug addict, has returned home and is trying to make amends to Mike and his mother, Katie (Joely Richardson).

Phoebe finally found out about Adam's sex addiction when he found a token addicted in his pocket the morning after sleeping with him. He took some time away from him, but finally agreed to continue their relationship. Neil talks Dede out of having sex with his rude ex-boyfriend, and they go to a dance together. They almost kissed, but they did not. Mike and Danny got into a fight when Mike thought Danny stole his mother's pills. Danny reveals that Mike gave Katie Hepatitis C, and confronts him about hitting him when he was a kid. Mike slaps Danny, who attacks Mike and drops Katie; after realizing what he had done, Danny panicked and ran out of the house.

Phoebe became frustrated by Adam's unwillingness to touch him physically, and decided after they had a fight. Adam slept with a prostitute. Dede came to Neil's place, and helped him clean his house and burn his porn. He admits he has never been 'just friends' with a man before. Mike finds Katie's pills, and realizes Danny does not steal them. Katie tells Mike to leave because "always has to be right", and Mike goes looking for Danny. When he came out, Katie called to tell him that Danny was in hospital after DUI. Mike hugged his son in the hospital, who had been awake for eight months. Adam invites his ex-girlfriend, Becky (Emily Meade), and when they start by reviving his father's problem, he then wants Adam to slap him. When she refused, she broke down, locked herself in the bathroom and tried to kill herself. Neil takes the train to get to Adam and breaks his bathroom door to save Becky. Adam was aware and returned to Phoebe, who admitted he was also imperfect. Neil confronts his sexually abusive mother, Roberta (Carol Kane), and all addicts celebrate their frivolity.
