Exit (Chinese: literally "Yesterday") is a 2001 Chinese drama film directed by Zhang Yang, starring and based on the true life story of Jia Hongsheng. Jia, an actor and former drug addict, battled his addiction to marijuana and heroin for five years from 1992 to 1997. All the cast members, from Jia and Jia's family members to the doctor and the patient at a mental institution Jia was treated for, real people playing alone. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 4, 2001 and won the NETPAC Award.

The original Chinese title is a hint for the classic Beatles song "Yesterday". References to The Beatles, among whom Jia is a big fan, were also made throughout the film. In addition to dressing up like John Lennon, Jia also fantasizes about himself as Lennon's son and pronounces the Mandarin translation from his lyrics to Let It Be religiously. However, Michael Jackson, who owns the rights to most Beatles songs, refused to give permission for the song or the title for use in the film. Instead, the film uses Chinese rocker songs such as Cui Jian, Tang Dynasty and Dou Wei.

Plot

Jia Hongsheng, graduated from the Central Drama Academy in Beijing in 1989, gained fame in the late 80s and early '90s as an actor in films such as The Silver Snake Case and A Woman from North Shaanxi . During the rehearsal for the show entitled Kiss of the Spider Woman (also directed by Zhang Yang) in the fall of 1992, Jia first made contact with marijuana and later became addicted and even occasional experiments with heroin. In 1995, after the filming of Weekend Lover, Jia stopped acting entirely and was alive from her younger sister, Wang Tong. Being a big fan of The Beatles, Jia listens to their music obsessively and begins to imagine himself as John Lennon's son.

In late 1995, Jia Jia Fengsen's parents and Chai Xiuling, both theatrical actors from Northeast China, decided to move to Beijing to help their son stop using drugs. Wang Tong, who previously moved, also returned to live with his parents and brothers in the same apartment. Early attempts by elderly parents to penetrate the inner world of their son met with indifference, sometimes even hostility. Over time, however, Jia starts to open gradually. He started walking regularly with his father, usually buying a bottle or two of beer along the way. Jia Fengsen also purchased his son's cassette tapes by The Beatles, as requested by the latter.

In early 1996, however, Jia Hongsheng relapsed after stopping drugs for nearly half a year. On March 19, 1996, after drinking many bottles of beer to celebrate his twenty-ninth birthday, Jia slapped his father, claiming to teach the last "meaning of life". Jia's family then contacted the police. Three policemen came the next day and took Jia to a mental institution.

While in mental institutions, Jia put in drugs and his condition improved significantly. More importantly, she stopped fantasizing and began to see herself as an ordinary human being. The doctor then determined that Jia did not suffer from schizophrenia but recommended that Jia remain in the institution for a longer time to completely stop using the drugs. On March 19, 1997, on his thirtieth birthday, Jia was eventually discharged.

Reception

Stop premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 4, 2001 and won the NETPAC Award (tied to Iranian Raye makhfi film by Payak). The film opened in the United States on September 13, 2002, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. When it closed on October 17, 2002, it grossed US $ 18,531 at the box office. American film critic Roger Ebert gave the star a two and a half stars rating; said the film is not so much about drug addiction as it is about "the ideals of the untapped Chinese drug addiction". He calls it a "bold experiment, based on life and using actors to play on their own, but he buys into all the false notions that artists are too brilliant to be aware of - that drugs and liquor are almost necessary to tame their creativity, sickness, and allow them to tolerate life [...] So the 'cure' is not so much to stop using as it stops dreaming, one must become boring to be clean and conscious.
