A licensed professional consultant ( LPC ) is a license for mental health professionals in some countries.
In the US, licensed professional counselors (or in some states, "licensed clinical professional counselors" or "licensed mental health counselors") provide mental health care and substance abuse to millions of Americans. Licensed professional consultants (LPCs) are mental health providers of doctoral and masters level, who are trained to work with individuals, families, and groups in dealing with mental, behavioral, and emotional problems and disorders. LPCs form a large percentage of the workforce working in community mental health centers, institutions, and organizations, and are employed within and covered by managed care organizations and health plans. LPC also works with active duty military personnel and their families, as well as veterans.
Licenses are granted for professional counselors ( LPC ) and professional counselor supervisors ( LPC-S ); The apprentice participant is identified by the corresponding suffix "I" ( LPC-I ), and the Licensed Professional Counselor Partner, with the suffix "-A"; this also applies to licensed therapists, as in the case of the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist ( LMFT ) defined as: LMFTA .
In the US, exact titles vary by state, but the most commonly used titles are licensed mental health counselors (LMHC). Several US states, including Illinois, Maine, and Tennessee, have implemented a two-tier system in which both LPC and LCPC (or equivalents) are used. In those countries high-level professionals are given the privilege to practice independently. However, in most countries, LPC or LMHC can practice independently. The Licensed Professional Counselor is one of six types of licensed mental health professionals providing psychotherapy in the United States.
In addition to their education, LPCs should have a supervised clinical experience and must pass the state licensing exam. Different countries require one of several different licensing checks. An example is the National Counselor Examination for License and Certification (NCE) as well as the National Certified Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE). LPCs are governed by federal and state laws, which either protect the title of LPC or LMHC or completely define the scope of practice of a professional counselor and establish the protection of a particular client. If the LPC is also a member of a professional association or has received additional certification, they must comply with the code of ethics of the professional association or certification body they have aligned.

Requirements for professional counselors
United States
LPC Licenses (or variations, eg LCPC, LMHC, etc.) Acknowledged in 50 states in the United States, as well as the Districts of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The requirements vary from one jurisdiction to the next. Most states require some combination of a master's degree, counseling and supervisory experience, and passing a national exam, such as the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and/or National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).
Summary of requirements of the Texas LPC state board serves as an example; requirements vary from state to state. For example, the requirements of a practicum/internship (during a master's degree) vary significantly between countries (ie: 300 in Texas and 1000 in Vermont). Course requirements and credit amounts also vary, making tradeoffs between countries difficult for many licensed counselors.
- A master's degree or a doctorate in counseling or a related field.
- Academic work in each of the following areas: normal human growth and development; abnormal human behavior; assessment or assessment techniques; theory of counseling; methods or counseling techniques (individuals and groups); research; lifestyle and career development; social, cultural and family issues; and professional orientation.

- Upon completion of a bachelor's degree and prior to application, an applicant must take and pass the National Counselor Examination and Texas Jurisprudence Examination. Upon receiving a temporary LPC license from the council, applicants may begin a supervised post-graduate counseling experience (internship). 3000 hours with at least 1,500 being direct apprentice client contact under the supervisory supervisory board approved by the board is required. 3000 hours may not be completed in less than 18 months. Exceptions
Some states, such as Oregon, have widespread exceptions that allow professional counseling practices without a license.
In Alabama, nothing in the chapter governs professional counseling that applies to the activities, services, titles and description of the employed person, as a professional or as a volunteer, in counseling practice for a recognized IRS 501 (c) (3) public nonprofit and private organizations or charities. [Alabama Code 34-8A-3-a-6]
Canada
In the Canadian province of Quebec, Ordre des conseillers et conseilleres d'orientation et psychoeducateurs et psychoeducatrices du Quebec (OCCOPPQ) provides counselor licenses. The Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association, CCPA offers different certification, Canadian Certified Counselor (CCC), separate from regular professional membership.
The Association of Canada Professional Counselors (CPCA) is a national competency-based association that provides the appointment of Registered Professional Counselors (RPCs) to their members. Unlike title-based associations, certain degree levels do not automatically qualify for applicants for membership. Instead, CPCA requires core competencies in education and experience before taking the qualifying exam and undergoing psychological tests as part of the membership application process. The counselor should then start a two-year nomination under the supervision of a approved Clinical Supervisor before becoming a full member. The role of CPCA membership is a mixture of Diploma, Bachelor, Master, and PhD degree holders, and its primary objective is the public protection and promotion of competence in the mental health profession in Canada.
As well; The Canadian Counseling Advisory Federation (CACCF) Federation promotes, establishes and monitors the competence of addicted counselors in Canada using current and effective, internationally recognized practices. CACCF certification issues and its professional behavior review process provide public protection for counselors, employers, regulators, clients and their families.
