Rules

The cards are divided into four thirteen lines. As cards are removed and removed from the next game. The gap they left behind is filled by cards that have the same suit and rank higher than the cards to the left of the gap. (For example, 4? Can be placed next to 3?) However, any gap on the right of the King is considered dead and no card can fill it.

Each gap on the left side of the line should be placed by the deuce and the line must be built with the suit next to deuce (i.e. 2-3-4-5, etc.). This is the wisdom of the appropriate players will occupy which line.

When there is no possibility of movement, the round ends. Cards that are not in the order are collected, be sure to leave any sequence of settings (e.g., ? 2-3-4-5) behind. In Montana and Spaces, the cards are then shuffled; in the Gap, they are not. The cards are then redeal, ensuring there is a gap in each row on the right of each sequence of settings or on the far left of the line if there is no sequence of settings formed on that line. There are only three rounds in the usual rules. But some variants allow four, and some have no limits.

The game is won when all 48 cards are arranged in numerical order and in a suit, with a gap of each line next to Kings at the extreme right end of the line. The probability of winning depends on which rules are followed. In Spaces, where cards are shuffled after each round and round is limited to three, experienced players will win maybe one game at 20. In Gaps (cards are not shuffled, but the limit of three rounds remains), a win in seven matches may be expected. If the number of rounds is unlimited, winning is only a matter of time, whether the card is shuffled or not.

Variant

There are several variants of this game.

One variant is called Addiction Solitare, a game developed by GameHouse for Yahoo! Competition. The game is played exactly like Gap except that there are three reshuffles instead of the two standards and the As cards can be used in every reshuffle and retraction to create a gap.

There are also variants with two decks, sometimes called Double Montana or Big Paganini. Cards are distributed in eight rows of 13 cards each. Aces are removed and placed to the left of each row. In some sub-variants, two redeals are allowed, in others, no redeals.
