Food Addicts Anonymous ( FAA ) is a twelve-step program for people with food addiction, who are patterned after the Alcoholics Anonymous program. This is based on the premise that some people are addicted to high carbohydrate foods and need to abstain from such foods to avoid excessive consumption.

History and description

Food Addicts Anonymous (FAA) was founded in 1987 in West Palm Beach, Florida by the founder who calls himself "Judith C." In 2007, there were over 150 weekly meetings around the world in addition to over the phone and online meetings. The organization held meetings in the US, Canada, Australia, England, Norway, Sweden, and Ireland.

The FAA argues that some people are addicted to certain foods and must distance themselves from them; like other twelve-step programs, FAA members believe that the help of higher forces is needed for them to avoid the substance they covet. The organization has a suggested food plan that asks for abstinence from sugar, flour, and wheat. (The call to abstain from this specific food is one difference between FAA and Overeaters Anonymous.) All sugar, sugar substitutes, and artificial sweeteners are limited by the plan. All forms of wheat and flour, including flour not made of wheat, are also limited. Food fat is limited. The FAA shows that its members eat a variety of foods at certain intervals and in defined proportions and keep track of what they are eating.
