Plot
Jon Martello is a young Italian American and a modern Don Juan living in New Jersey, with a short list of things he cares about: "my body, my mats, my vehicle, my family, my church, my children, my son, my porno." Although he has a very active sex life, he is more sexually satisfied by looking at pornography and masturbation, which he says allows him to "lose himself".
One night with two friends, Bobby and Danny, Jon saw Barbara Sugarman, a young Jewish woman from a more prosperous background. Though he found it interesting, he declined his offer to stand one night. He tracks her on Facebook and invites her to lunch. There is a common attraction, but Barbara insists on a long-term courtship, which lasts for more than a month without sex. He encourages Jon to take night classes to get office work out of the service industry, and Jon spoils his love for a romance movie, which he usually thinks of as unrealistic fantasy. They met each other's family and Jon's parents loved him.
Both have sex, but Jon is still not satisfied. She loves Barbara and thinks her body is perfect, but still finds pornography more satisfying. While he was sleeping, Jon watched pornography. Barbara caught it and was startled. He prepares to leave Jon, but he denies that he is watching pornography and claims it is a joke sent to him by a friend.
Their relationship continued, with Jon watching pornography especially outside his apartment, hiding his habit from Barbara. He was caught watching a video on his cell phone before class by Esther, a middle-aged woman whom Jon had previously met crying alone. Jon politely drove him away. Barbara continued to assert control, insisting that cleaning up her own apartment, a task Jon felt satisfactory, was not something comfortable for her. Barbara checks the browser history on Jon's computer, confronting her with evidence that she continues to see pornography, then ends their relationship.
Jon tries to get back to his old lifestyle, but ends with a downward spiral. Esther continues to reach out, offering Jon the benefit of her experience. She lends an erotic video that she believes has a more realistic portrayal of sexual relationships. He responded by starting a sexual encounter in his parked car. He persuades Jon to try to masturbate without pornography, but he can not do it. He felt the reason he was more satisfied with watching than sex was that pornography was a one-sided affair. If Jon wants to lose himself, it's for someone else, a shared experience. Esther reveals that her husband and son died in a car accident. With him, Jon formed an emotional sexual relationship.
Jon tells his family about the breakup with Barbara: while they are unhappy, her sister Monica declares that Barbara is just dating Jon because she knows she can manipulate her. Jon meets with Barbara and apologizes for lying to her about pornography. Barbara says she asked me one thing about her and she failed. Jon replied that he was asking a lot about him and he could not live up to his expectations. When she tells him to never contact him again, she sees how superficial she is and realizes she's better off without her.
Jon started dating Esther. Although he is much older and has no interest in getting married, Jon believes he really understands Esther and that they can get emotionally lost.
