California Society of Addiction Medicine ( CSAM ) is a California physician organization specializing in treating addiction. Drug addiction is a medical specialty that provides care and treatment for people with substance use disorders. These include pharmaceutical and behavioral care and are in harmony with other specialties including public health, psychiatry and internal medicine. CSAM was founded in 1973, and has been a State of the American Society of Addiction Medicine since 1989.
CSAM advances the treatment of addiction to alcohol and other addictions through physician, doctor-in-training, and other healthcare professionals. In addition, CSAM promotes the research, prevention and implementation of evidence-based care. It advocates laws and regulations that enhance and extend substance abuse treatment.

Education and research
CSAM provides a wide range of continuing medical education, including nationally-recognized preparatory courses for the American Drug Administration (ABAM) Certification Exam. CSAM also holds an annual conference on the State of the Art in Drug Addiction and workshops on issues ranging from pain and addiction and short screening and intervention to opioid treatment and trauma and addiction.
The Foundation for Education and Medical Research for the treatment of alcohol addiction and other drug dependence was established in 1981 as a sister organization at the California Society of Addiction Medicine. The Foundation's mission is to upgrade and improve the doctor's education on all aspects of addiction, including harmful drinking or use of drugs, medical sequels, family impact and how to support recovery. Its main activity is guiding the learning experience at the three-day annual conference on addiction drugs offered by CSAM.

Advocacy
CSAM members advocate for greater medical access and improve state-level care between elected California officials and regulators, while partnering with many other medical and non-governmental organizations. Among the issues CSAM supports are raising funds for addiction treatment, raising standards for drug abuse treatment workforce, improving care and prevention for youth and young adults and providing better treatment opportunities for health professionals suffering from addictive diseases.
